The Industrial Revolution has long represented the deepest cut a double-edged sword can make; on the one hand, it established a no-boundaries approach to human progress while at the same time opened up myriad new and different ways for man to interact with the environment. However, this interaction soon took a turn for the worse as the environment fell into various stages of ruin with each subsequent step humanity made toward greater progress. Now with over six billion people inhabiting the planet, Earth's ecosystems are being systematically destroyed by the ever-growing girth of urban sprawl. Bibliography lists 13 sources.
