Compaq's 1Q96 Sales and Reaction

Abstract: A 7 page paper discussing an article that appeared in Business Week in 1996. Compaq had attained the status of the largest manufacturer of personal computers in the world, but it was unable to sustain profits of more than 20 percent and suffered an 18 percent decline in its stock value when it was left with millions in unsold inventory at the end of 1995 as a result of not heeding industry trends and acceding to customer wishes. The paper discusses the wisdom of Compaq moving into the area of Internet servers for business and its determination to set a Compaq standard. That sort of standard is fine as long as it is in concert with the needs of the customer, but the company's view at the time was that it was Compaq's, rather than the customer's, needs that the company intended to address.
