Abstract: This 8 page paper examines the life and achievements of the controversial Russian Tsar; Peter the Great or Peter I. Seen by some as a hero who modernized Russia and by others as a despot, the paper looks at the life, work and influence of Peter the Great. The paper starts by looking at the background to his rule, along with the main aims behind his reforms and the challenges that he faced. The way he reformed Russia, including reforms to the power of the church, education, military, social and political reforms are all discussed. The bibliography cites 3 sources.
