Guilt In Hawthorne's Short Stories

Abstract: It takes strength of character and an understanding of individual versus collective moral responsibility to resist the judging of others. Many people are guided to do right by a sense of guilt over actions they deem as wrong or 'sinful'. This 5 page paper argues that Nathaniel Hawthorne, through the short stories Young Goodman Brown and My Kinsman, Major Molineux has taken that precept one step further and shown that guilt concerning the condemnation of others should be a matter of personal and collective moral responsibility.
