The Welfare System: Failure

Abstract: 8 pages in length. Despite myriad attempts from a number of presidential administrations to reform a system fraught with a combination of conceptual and delivery problems, the welfare system continues to represent one of the greatest social, political and economic failures in America's history. The original intent of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) - otherwise known as welfare - was to provide short-term financial help for individuals and families alike to get back on their feet; what it has evolved into, however, is an overextended, abused system that fails to instill self-sufficiency by perpetuating idleness.
