Grounded Theory In Sociological Research

Abstract: Within the realm of sociological studies is the study of minorities and how they relate to other social structures such as the family or society in general. Sexual deviance falls within the classification of minorities and has many subdivisions that are also considered applicable for sociological study. A subject that has been of concern in recent publications is transgenderism. This 8 page paper reviews an article in The Sociological Review (August 1999), based on a study published in book form by one of the authors: Male Femaling: A Grounded Theory Approach to Cross-Dressing and Sex-Changing, by Richard Ekins. This article was chosen for review for a number of reasons: the use of grounded theory in sociological studies is relatively unknown; the subject of transgendering is a contemporary concern in reference to social systems theory, issues in deviance, family interaction and personal development; and the non-judgemental philosophical outlook of the researcher in his presentation of the subject. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
