The need for artificial stimulation has long been associated with the social circuit, inasmuch as various drugs provide an assortment of synthetically inspired sensations that take people to another mental or physical plane. Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), more commonly known as ecstasy, is one of the more popular party drugs because of the favorable feelings it induces, the result of a change of the brain's neurotransmitter serotonin that controls mood. Ecstasy produces a false sense of peacefulness that compels users to interact with one another in a markedly tolerant and accepting fashion known as empathogenesis; the longing to convey love and be in the company of beauty - technically termed entactogenesis - has served to label ecstasy as the 'hug drug.'
