The Mahdinate in Frank Herbert's Dune

Abstract: The first time a person sits down to read the science fiction odyssey Dune by Frank Herbert it is more than possible that the reader will be overwhelmed by the amount of information and the depth of the characterizations - as well as the extensive amount of religious symbolism used throughout the story. This 5 page paper examines the thesis that Herbert utilized the mythical origins of the Islamic belief of the Mahdi, or Messiah, as the basic theme for Dune. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
