Gustave Courbet

Abstract: Gustave Courbet was a man who thought of himself as a defining element in the life of his times. Courbet was first and foremost, a realist, whose political activity resulted in time in prison and eventual exile from France. Courbet's 1870 painting, The Cliff at Etretat after a Storm, was from the post Commune, pre-exile period when he enjoyed his greatest artistic drive, painting still lifes, landscapes, portraits and nudes in a style that had become characteristically his own. This 6 page paper explores the man, his personal history in the context of his time and seeks to give the evolving artist a look into how the above painting was completed and, or, may be emulated. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
