Abstract: Ballet is one of those arts that have a life of their own when the right combination of people come together. The grace and beauty sets the stage for the physical components, backed by musical scores that either define or merely accompany the dance. George Balanchine is noted for saying, ``Ballet is Woman''. That women play a central role in the presentation of the ballet is an understatement. To say that women have the power in ballet is an understatement that borders on a lie. For the most part, women in ballet, outside the ballerina and the occasssional choreographer and, or, director, have not been in positions of power. This 8 page paper profiles four choreographers: George Balanchine, Frederick Ashton, William Forsythe and Kenneth MacMillan. The way women are depicted in their work and the personal attitudes concerning women of the four male choreographers is examined and compared with the attitude toward women in the arts in general. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
