John Lyden/Film as Religion

Abstract: A 5 page book review the examines John Lyden's Film as Religion (2003). In this text, Lyden challenges the popular concept of what constitutes "religion." He presents the unique idea that movies perform a religious function, in that they provide collective myths that aid people in dealing with cultural anxieties and aspirations. As this suggests, Lyden endeavors to take the study of religion and film in a totally new direction. Rather than addressing films that have religious themes or figures, he discusses the "religious" manner in which the audience comprehends film. No additional sources cited.
