Polacheck's "I Came A Stranger"

Abstract: 4 pages in length. Hilda Satt Polacheck's autobiography entitled "I Came a Stranger: The Story of a Hull House Girl" tellingly reflects a time of drastic change, both within her personal life as well as in the lives of her family. The author's account of emigrating to the United States was initially not as rosy as, perhaps, she had anticipated, noting that her reality was in a constant state of chaos and lacking essential discipline. Indeed, Polacheck quickly became discombobulated by American customs and habits, escaping what might have otherwise been a downward spiral of social survival had it not been for the intervention of Jane Addams and Hull House.
