Abstract: This 36 page paper examines the franchise industry in the UK. The paper begins with some background and an industry analysis including statistics and trends for each of the major sectors. The paper then considers why franchises are so popular with franchisees and franchisors, looking at the workings of a franchise and how it compares to other business models such as licenses, exporting and joint ventures or the use of subsidiary companies. The paper ends by applying the different models and the statistics to five areas of franchises, manufacturing, finance, services, distribution and retail. The bibliography cites 23 sources.
