Abstract: This is a 3 page paper discussing the cultural transmission theory in sociology. Cultural transmission theory in sociology addresses the societal and cultural influences, impact and transmission of acceptable societal norms, perceptions and behaviors within generations and across generations of members of the same culture. Transmitted cultural behaviors can lead to generations of racism, sexism, deviance and poverty. One aspect of social evolution to remember however, of which cultural transmission is a major component, is that it is purposeful, innovative and adaptive to new societal changes. Whereas biological evolution takes generations for change, social evolution can occur within generations. Cultural transmission can have a predictable process in which cultures can adapt to societies outside of their own and change their cultural frame accordingly. Despite this process of adaptation however, historical cultural components still exist within the transmission process which results in some of the differences found between different cultures within the same geographical location.
