Three Biographies of Jefferson

Abstract: A 6 page analysis of three biographies of Thomas Jefferson. The writer evaluates Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History by Fawn M. Brodie; The Jefferson Scandals: a rebuttal by Virginius Dabney; and Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy by Annette Gordon-Reed, and concludes that Brodie's book offers the best overall perspective of Jefferson's life while Gordon-Reed's book gives the most evenhanded and well-balanced treatment of whether or not Jefferson had a relationship with his slave, Sally Hemings.
