Being Human in a Natural World

Abstract: A 5 page essay that contrasts the perspective of two essayists, Gary Snyder and Barbara Kingsolver, on what it means to be a human being in terms of the natural world. The writer argues that these writers see humanity in a manner that is more akin to the balance found by Native Americans before the coming of the Europeans, than it is to the Cartesian /Newtonian Enlightenment paradigm that has been prevalent for so long.
