Abstract: An 8 page discussion of the importance of effective clinical career ladders in the nursing environment. The author contends that the development of a system which allows for internal promotion in the nursing agency, i.e. a clinical career ladder, can improve nursing efficiency, job satisfaction, and even loyalty. While the personal and organizational costs can be substantial, these costs are far outweighed by the improvement in nursing efficiency and patient welfare which results.
