William Blake/"The Chimney Sweep"

Abstract: A 6 page essay that analyzes Blake's poems "The Chimney Sweep" (both versions) in his Songs of Innocence and Experience. The writer argues that the ultimate meaning of the poems derives from a synthesis of the two "contraries" considered together. Blake's intent with these poems is always to alter the consciousness of the reader, to open a new vista, a new perspective, to force the reader to reconsider the paradigms of the era.
