The Poetry Of Love

Abstract: (7 pp). If we were to guess, we might feel comfortable in saying that more has been written about love, over time, than any other emotion. It is poetry that seems to lend itself more to the ideal definition of love. Should we suppose that as humans we long for it so; or are we to believe that we will never quite "get it right" and poets might give us some advice about this most supreme of emotions. This discussion will look at various idealized expressions of love over time, and through a poetical element, analyze that work. We are probably more aware of some of these "Valentine-like" first lines than we are of the poets themselves, but the poets who will be used are Marlowe, Lewis, Hardy, Browning, Johnson and Purdy.
