France's Cohabitation System: Impact Upon The French Polity

Abstract: 15 pages in length. There can be little argument surrounding the fact that cohabitation between French President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minster Lionel Jospin has experienced some rough patches; while both political representatives strive to maintain France's domestic policy for the benefit of all, the fact that each man's ideals sometimes originate from divergent domains often leads to disagreements of substantial proportion. Cohabitation between the French President and Prime Minister is a relatively new venture, having only been in existence since 1986. As the third period representatives, Chirac and Jospin have proven their prowess at keeping alive both the essence of cohabitation, as well as the political and personal struggles inherent to such a system.
