The Philosophical Basis Of Privacy

Abstract: 16 pages in length. The Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary defines privacy as one's right to freedom from unauthorized intrusion. Clearly, this definition does not reflect contemporary society and the myriad ways in which personal information is readily collected; from medical records to workplace surveillance to personal computers, virtually no one's privacy is protected in today's world. Are people still entitled to their privacy when certain pieces of information might well impact someone else's life? Is there too much personal information ending up in the hands of those persons and agencies who can ultimately do us harm? Or is there a fine line of lost privacy that is inherent to maintaining control in a world whose population is exploding at the seams? Inasmuch as there are more than two sides to this particular controversial topic, one might readily surmise that there could not exist one rectifying solution. Bibliography lists 24 sources.
