Diabetic Eye Disease: Psychosocial Impact

Abstract: 10 pages in length. Diabetes is perhaps one of the most debilitating and dangerous diseases known to mankind; however, it is just as silent and invisible as a burglar in the dead of night. This chronic disease can affect anyone at any time of his or her life, significantly damaging kidney function, eyesight and having the very real potential of causing limb amputation. Indeed, one can readily surmise that adjusting to such vast dietary and energy modifications is enough to address; however, when one loses one's eyesight to the ravages of diabetes, the psychosocial ramifications can become overwhelming. Coming to terms with potentially blindness is not an easy task, no matter if one is in adulthood or at the onset of old age. For the elderly, the aspect of diabetic eye disease presents a dual meaning, in that on the one hand it means life without vision, while on the other it indicates yet another indication of the body's desire to shut down for good. Indeed, coming to terms with this dichotomy can play havoc upon the elderly individual's already-fragile state of mind. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
