Classical Antiquity: Its Influence Upon Art And Architecture Of The European Middle Ages

Abstract: 5 pages in length. Classical antiquity has played an integral role in myriad mediums: literature, music, art and architecture. Particularly pertinent to the European Middle Ages, classical antiquity was significant in the appearance of art and architecture, inasmuch as it was representational of the transformation from the typical Gothic appearance. The writer discusses how historical structures such as the Chartres Cathedral, Giotto's Arena Chapel, the Church of Madeleine at Vezelay, St. Michael at Hildesheim, St. Etienne, Abbey Church at St. Denis and the Church of Notre Dame all clearly demonstrate the influence that classical antiquity had upon art and architecture of that period. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
