Amy Tan/Mothers & Daughters in Joy Luck Club

Abstract: A 5 page essay, in which the writer discusses how Tan explores the intricate bonds that exist between mothers and daughters. The novel concerns four aging members of the "Joy Luck Club," who gather regularly in San Francisco to play mah-jongg. By exploring the lives of these women, both past and present, and their relationships with their native-born American daughters, Tan demonstrates that all of the women, Chinese-born immigrants and American-born natives, share the experience of having to differentiate themselves from their mothers, while also, simultaneously, endeavoring to maintain a relationship with the one woman who connects them intimately with their past.
