Occupational Hygiene: Developing a Monitoring Strategy for Personal Exposure to Hazardous Materials

Abstract: A 10 page discussion of the many considerations which are inherent in occupational hygiene. Emphasizes that occupational hygiene is a multifaceted field. It is a field which involves not only a thorough understanding of facility operations and layout but also an understanding of the contaminants and their mechanism for exposure. Includes a brief outline of the characteristics of particulate, carbon monoxide, and radon contamination. Concludes that occupational hygiene requires much more than simple ambient monitoring for contaminants, it involves planning in regard to employee movement, personal monitoring devices and protective equipment, and medical evaluation. The occupational hygienist must be capable of assessing the workplace, devising effective monitoring and safety programs, and implementing each if worker safety is to be assured.
