Many, such as the Chunnel System spanning the English Channel, are designed to carry many hundreds of thousands of people per day through their portals. There have been tragic fires in a majority of tunnel systems like these, and steps must be taken to engineer future tunnels with the thought of fire prevention and safety in mind.
