The Dominant Ideology of Art Verses the Reception Theory

Abstract: A 5 page exploration of the validity of the theory of dominant ideology, the theory that art is used as a tool to reinforce existing power structures. Uses examples of the church control of art during the middle ages to substantiate that the theory of dominant ideology is valid for at least one period of our history. Concludes, that in truth, it is a theory which has application even today. While the concerns of Wolfgang Iser and Hans-Georg Gadamer, i.e. the reception theory and translatability, are obviously valid they do not negate the theory of dominant ideology.
