Deviance: Living Outside The Norm

Abstract: This 10 page paper argues that The ideas surrounding what constitutes deviancy and how it should be approached have changed dramatically in the past fifty years. A new perspective that assesses the primary variables of the system in which an individual functions and then eliminates the problem of the dichotomy of 'us' and 'them' and places the individual within the process of decision making rather than as an either/or to conformity is needed in a world where society is becoming synonymous to diversity. Labeling theory and commitment theory are examined briefly. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
