Abstract: A 5 page paper discussing these two aspects of Roman life and comparing them to our own society of today. Rome gave us several institutions after which to pattern our own, one of which is the Senate. The deterioration of the Senate from being a powerful part of government to being little more than a figurehead group giving visibility to the elite serves as a reminder to continually guard the checks and balances designed by the authors of the Constitution.
