Firestarters - The Trailblazing Females of the Jazz & Big Band Era

Abstract: A 5 page paper that examines the sexism and racism that faced female performers during the jazz and big band era of the 1930s and 1940s. Discussed is the resistance and non-acceptance that confronted these performers as well as the innovation and persistence used by legendary performers such as Billy Tipton in conquering these obstacles.
