Virtual Communities -- A Threat to Real Community

Abstract: This 10 page report discusses the existence and proliferation of virtual communities and whether or not they truly exist as the new and future form of community building and human interaction. The most fundamental concepts of community has been long recognized as having a central place in the social fabric of human life. Therefore, the question presents itself as to whether or not virtual communities serve or damage the larger human community. This writer examines the issue from the view that virtual communities are ultimately detrimental and serve purposes that have little to do with true community building.
