What Defines A 20th Century Author?

Abstract: 8 pages in length. What defines a twentieth century author? Is the manner in which he employs the language? Is it the stylistic flair she attributes to the particular topic? Or perhaps it might be when the reader gains a significant understanding of the author's personal existence through the subtle yet poignant prose? Indeed, the Norton Anthology inference is that a prolific twentieth century author possesses all of these characteristics and more. When defining a twentieth century author, the Norton Anthology suggests that such a person embraces a cornucopia of aspects: personal triumph, social transmission and spiritual conscience. Poet Elizabeth Bishop exemplifies what it means to represent twentieth century literature. The writer discusses that with a combination of overt simplistic presence and veiled darkness, she represents the very fundamental approach necessary to successfully master Norton's definition.
