Billy Sunday and Will Rogers: Thoughts on Prohibition

Abstract: 5 pages in length. Billy Sunday, in one of his numerous sermons about alcohol being "God's Worst Enemy" preached that, although some argued personal liberty was at stake, in reality personal liberty simply meant that a man could "stand up at the bar and fill his hide so full of red liquor that he is transformed for the time being into an irresponsible, dangerous, evil-smelling brute." Rogers, on the other hand, predicted that "if it was repealed tomorrow, the lives and habits and morals of the whole country wouldn't be ruined." These interesting and opposing viewpoints are presented within this paper. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
