Mary Cassatt

Abstract: Mary Cassatt was a well known, prolific artist of great note who lived from 1844 to 1926. An ex-patriot, she settled in France, and for a short time, Italy. She painted in the Impressionistic style and was counted among some of the early artists of that genre, including Degas, Manet and Courbet. Current scholarship on women artists in late nineteenth-century France has focused on feminist critique of her depiction of women and the dominant social and ideological forces that helped to shape her work. This 13 page paper examines her life and her art and confronts the critiques of feminist historians such as Griselda Pollock. Bibliography lists 13 sources.
