The Caste System In India

Abstract: A 5 page paper. Caste is a system of social classes that has existed in India for more than 3,000 years. This essay explains the four major categories of caste and the division within each caste that creates sub-castes. The Varnas dictate the social hierarchy in the general society and the sub-castes, the Jatis, dictate a social hierarchy within the Varna. The fifth caste, the untouchables, is explained. The writer comments on the exclusionary functions of caste and the system's influence today. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
